The Citizens Three Goals to Nil Man United: Hemp scores in Manchester City comfortable victory.

Much like bad weather tore through the northwest the night before, City swept United aside at the their home ground. It was a emphatic three goal win for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This result signalled successive league setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since last May, putting them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capability to juggle domestic and continental football with a small team has been a hotly discussed topic since they earned a place in the UCL. Looking at the fixture list, it always appeared this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked tired all game, the historic win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Skinner had tried to make changes with a a few adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the dropping of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench was questioned.

City, in contrast, have no similar workload issues. Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to build for Skinner and his squad from the first whistle. This was a exhibition of the quality from Manchester City whose potent attack controlled and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes display that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.

This placed City firmly in control and saw the visitors disorganized. Before this encounter, United had let in just a handful in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the face of Manchester City's attacking flair.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came soon when Miedema used her strength to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything early on, using the gap left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her crosses were posing a threat and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had a number of attacks forward, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the wide areas but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, on the other hand, controlled the ball, probing their opposition and trying to lure them of their organization.

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A delivery to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s seventh header of the season.

They added to their advantage with two more goals just before the break. When Rose was permitted to advance through the midfield from defense, the field widened for the hosts. The influential Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right side before delivering a accurate low cross for Shaw to bundle home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a rapid change in the ball saw Hemp given the space to drive a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The most obvious change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, striking the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Having failed to beat any side who placed above them last season, City's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a favorable position after nine games.
