Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
