The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
